I am always looking for new and creative things to do with the kids. With the lakes all frozen there is a plethora of ice all around us. The kids have been having a blast skating, but I was trying to figure out how else to use the ice for fun activities. After the kids shot down my idea of strapping ice skates to an old kitchen chair and pulling the chair around on the ice I came up with another idea – ice bowling! We have a couple of friends who own bowling pro shops (what are the odds right?) I contacted them and it turns out a bowling alley in Anchorage had just replaced their pins. They were willing to give us 20 pins. (Actually they were willing to give us a lot more, but how many pins does a guy need?) We now had pins, the next issue was what to do for a ball. The kids were quick to point out that it would be extremely difficult to bowl using a traditional ball with gloves on. Our solution? Milk jugs full of water and frozen solid. They work great! We have been having a great time with our two lane bowling alley. The only issue is that setting up all those pins by hand does get old fast. The kids are already trying to come up with a pin reset system using a wood framework and strings attached to the tops of the pins.
